Biography

SaxShades is a saxophone quartet based in Harrogate, Yorkshire, with a particular interest in contemporary music. Evolving from another quartet, SaxShades has been in existence since 2002, and with our current line-up since 2006. Unusually for a non professional ensemble, SaxShades has made a significant contribution to the saxophone quartet repertoire through regular commissions. Between 2002 and 2007 we commissioned five works from British and American composers, and were also fortunate to receive a piece as a gift from the Lancashire based composer Don Ashton.

SaxShades released a CD recording of new music for saxophone quartet that has a special connection with the group. With a theme of Beginnings, it features the six works written for us, together with pieces that we premiered and some for which this is the first recording. Three of the works were also their composers’ first saxophone quartet. The music reflects a range of contemporary styles, with an emphasis on funky rhythms and quirky melodies, which we feel are ideally suited to the spirit of the individual saxophones and their distinctive quartet blend. Including our six dedicated works, Beginnings features a total of eight world premiere recordings. We hope that you will enjoy discovering our exciting selection of new music for saxophone quartet.
